Some people like to get involved in a
variety of non-mainstream sexual activities, where they may engage in
sexual activities in public, with people they have just met, with
people who are not their partners, and/or of an alternative nature. As
I see it, there are at least four kinds of risk involved with this kind
of stuff: The law You may be subject to legal sanction from the police if you overstep the law (which, if you're cruising beats, you are most likely doing). In some ways, although traumatic, this may actually be the lowest-impact risk you face. After all, who cares if some magistrate knows that you like anonymous transvestite sex in public, as long as your grandmother doesn't find out? Loss of privacy There is the possibility of being 'outed', either as someone who is not straight, or as someone who enjoys less socially-acceptable activities, to friends or family. Embarassment and relationship issues may flow from that pubicity. Here technology is a major problem, as SMS messages remain on mobile phones, web browsers remember web sites, digital cameras show things that should have been deleted, etc. Health issues Health issues result mainly from unsafe sex, and can be fatal. This is the area of risk with the potentially the greatest impact, ie: you can die from it. However, it is one of the easier areas to take control of, because you can decide not to have unsafe sex and take steps to protect yourself. Physical safety There are safety issues to do with gay-bashers and other criminals who prey on people with alternative lifestyles. Forward planning and common sense can assist here. |
