	The pink triangle is sometimes used as a symbol of solidarity by the queer (GLBTI) community. It was originally used by the Nazis¹, who forced homosexuals in concentration camps to wear a pink triangle on their clothing, much as Jewish prisoners were forced to wear a Star of David. A black triangle was used to mark women such as lesbians and prostitutes. 1 Die, evil Nazi scum! I got myself a Luftwaffe uniform (minus swastikas) which I wear to bondage parties just to stick it up the Nazis- imagine how they'd feel if they knew a Greens- voting, vaguely Jewish- looking bisexual tranny was wandering around a lushly decadent bondage party in one of their uniforms...
	A red ribbon, especially when worn on a persons clothing, is a symbol of awareness of and solidarity with sufferers of HIV/AIDS.
	In Victoria red HIV/AIDS ribbons are sometimes worn with a simple fold instead of a loop (compare with the ribbon above) as an upside-down V-for-victory symbol, in the hope that one day everyone will be able to turn their ribbons up the other way to symbolise victory over HIV/AIDS.
	Symbol for femaleness and femininity. It is based on the goddess Diana's handmirror.
	Symbol for maleness and masculinity. It is derived from the symbol for Mars, the god of war, with his spear and round shield
	Symbol found on some transgender resources denoting gender-bendedness
	This symbol is generally accepted as denoting male homosexual love or partnership
	This symbol is generally accepted as denoting lesbian love or partnership
	the pentagram; a symbol identified with the Pagan faith. This does not, despite the lunatic rantings of the Christian Right, identify the wearer as a Satan-worshipper (see below). I don't mean to be rude, but I am frankly sick of being asked if I'm a Satan- worshipper by people who think they know all about non-mainstream religious/ spiritual symbology just because they've watched half a fucking episode of Charmed.
	A pentacle; it may identify the wearer as (i) an honest and conscientious Satan-worshipper¹, (ii) an angst-ridden teenager with dyed-black hair who wants to piss off their religious parents, or (iii) someone who bought a [insert name of heavy-metal band here] t-shirt at the local market last Saturday. I doubt the existence of true Satan-worshippers, as opposed to the 'stick- it- up- the- Christians' variety, because that would imply that they had taken the anti-deity figure from one religion, and created another, new, religion around it. Although it's not my place to be judgemental, I do not agree that a starting point of fundamental opposition to something else is a sensible basis on which to begin one's spirituality.
	Egyptian hieroglyphic known as the eye of Horus. In the West in the 1960s this symbol came to be associated with drug- using subcultures who used this as a symbol denoting altered or higher states of awareness of consciousness. Source: www.symbols.com
	the triskelion; this is a prominent symbol within the BDSM community. Note that it is supposed to be metallic, with arms rotating clockwise, filled with black, and with holes rather than dots. These seem very specific criteria to me! Read more here.
	A different version is triskelion is the logo of the ALSO Foundation, a Victorian AIDS charity. Also known as a Japanese mitsu tomoe.
	Symbol for the Greek god Hermes. Hermes was, unlike other gods, both male and female. This symbol is therefore used in biology and botany to mean 'double-sexed'.
	The international biohazard symbol. This symbol is found on containers which contain infectious or biologically-hazardous substances; avoid!
	The Queer Pagan symbol; a pentagram with rainbow colours.
	Lambda, a letter of the Greek alphabet, has been used as a gay and lesbian symbol since the 1970s. It is often seen in a lilac, pink, or purple colour and is interpreted by some as a symbol of unity under oppression.
	The gay pride flag, generally used as a symbol for the GLBTI community. Often seen on flags and bumper stickers. Shops which display rainbow flags may be gay-owned businesses.
	Bisexual pride flag. Although the flag itself does not seem to be commonly seen in Australia, the colour scheme of pink and blue merging into purple is used by some bisexual support and advocacy groups.
	Transgender pride flag. Not commonly seen in Australia (although perhaps I am looking in the wrong places).
	The Leather Pride flag/symbol features eight horizontal stripes of black and purple/dark blue, and one of white, with a heart.
	The BDSM Rights flag/symbol; presumably used by a similar group of people to the flag above. It features a similar set of stripes with a BDSM triskelion symbol.
	The Bear Pride flag features horizontal black, brown, beige, and whitestripes with a bear's footprint.

2257	A section of US law requiring operators of pornographic web sites to maintain records showing that all their models were over the age of 18 at the time the photos/ movies were shot.
24/7	In a BDSM context, a 24/7 relationship would be one where the submissive is at their dominant's disposal at all times of the day. See also Total Power Exchange
2th	contraction of toothing, where people use Bluetooth-enabled devices to fish for anonymous sexual contacts. More information on Sabrina's toothing page.
87	analingus; the number is a play on 69.
88	Apparent designation used by neo-Nazis [die, Nazi scum!] to stand for 'Heil Hitler'; 'H' is the eighth letter of the alphabet, repeated. Uncommonly encountered on the internet profiles of bondage- loving neo- Nazi wannabes. I have included this because there is sometimes some crossover of search terms between the BDSM and neo-Nazi communities; for example, searching for someone who is into uniforms could lead to either a BDSM enthusiast or a nutcase SS enthusiast.

AB	Adult Baby; a very specific fetish relating to a wish to be transformed into a baby. Sometimes seen as AB/DL, Adult Baby/Diaper (nappy) Lover.
ABC	An approach to the prevention of HIV infection, endorsed by some governments (most notably, the US government), churches, and some health services: Abstinence, particularly for young people; Being faithful, particularly for those in relationships; and Condom use, for anyone who engages in risky behaviour. This approach has many critics, who contend (correctly, in my view) that abstinence is unrealistic and being faithful to an unfaithful partner is likely to lead to adverse consequences.
AC/DC	colloquial term for bisexual (an ironic reference to electrical applicances which can run on alternating current or direct current (ie: mains power or batteries), and not to the legendary rock group).
accomodate	a person who says they can accomodate are willing to have you to to their house
active	in gay sex, the partner who takes the penetrative role See also: bottom, top, active, passive
admirer	a (usually male) person who is not a transvestite or transsexual, but who is attracted to or enjoys spending time with people who are.
AFF	Adult Friend Finder; along with AMM and alt.com, an adult match-making web site.
AIDS	Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome; an incurable and often fatal sexually-transmitted infection which destroys the body's immune system. Risk of infection can be minimised by safe sex practices. See also HIV, safe sex
alley-catting	UK term for a gang bang
alt.com	an adult match-making web site; along with AMM and AFF, this is one of the better-known ones
alt-sex	abbreviation of alternative sexuality. I use this term frequently to describe non-mainstream sexual practices including but not limited to homosexuality, bisexuality, group sex, polyamoury, and transgenderism.
AMM	Adult Match Maker; an adult match-making web site similar to AFF and alt.com.
ambisextrous	bisexual (possibly a colloquial term?). See also homoflexible
ambisexual	something which is shared by both genders/sexes, such as nipples
ampallang	male genital piercning which goes horizontally through the head of the penis from one side to the other
amyl	amyl nitrite; a muscle relaxant much-used by gay men to relax the anal sphincter for sex. It also decreases blood pressure by dilating the blood vessels.
anal beads	a series of beads on a cord which are inserted into the anus and then slowly pulled out to produce stimulation
analingus	term for rimming, or stimulation of the anus with the tongue. I have no idea if this is a real technical term, or whether it is a corruption of cunnilingus, but either way it is widely used. See also: roseleafing
androgynous, androgyne	someone whose appearance is not easily classified as either male or female, or who has the characteristics of both sexes
anime	style of Japanese cartoon, comic, or animation. On the net, erotic cartoons are sometimes referred to as anime or manga, regardless of whether they are actually anime or not. Erotic anime is technically referred to as hentai. See also: hentai, manga
Acheron	In Greek mythology, the Acheron river was believed to be a branch of the underworld river Styx over which Charon ferried the newly dead souls across into Hades (hell). Acheron translates as "river of woe".
armpit worship	fetish which involves worshipping the armpit, its hairiness, and its smells
arse	the correct spelling of the term for one's bottom. See also: ass, below
asexual	attracted to neither sex
ass	a member of the equine family similar to a donkey, and often used as a beast of burden. See also: arse, above
asymptomatic	Showing no symptoms
AtM (1)	Arse To Mouth; removing one's penis from your partner's anus and placing it in their mouth for oral sex. This is an obvious infection risk. Someone once told me (jokingly!) that love is taking your partner's penis out of your mouth and placing it in your anus, whereas true love is is taking your partner's penis out of your anus and placing it in your mouth...
AtM (2)	Internet shorthand for "at the moment"
AtM (3)	Automatic Teller Machine; a machine which banks use to dispense cash. You will need to know about these if you're going to get into some aspects of the alternative lifetyle; certain activities, venues, and clothing/equipment can be quite expensive.
au naturel	a euphemism for unprotected sex, ie: without a condom, and therefore quite dangerous
autosexual	related to sexual contact with oneself, such as masturbation
AVS	Adult Verification Service/Age Verification Service. A computer system, often using credit card details, which verifies that a person attempting to access an adult web site is over 18 or 21 years of age. It usually involves a payment of some kind (surprise!).

ball gag	a gag which features a round ball which is placed in the mouth and held in place with a strap
ballet heels	extremely high heels, more often found in fetish boots than normal shoes, which force the wearer's foot into a ballet- style en pointe position, ie: which force the wearer to walk/ stand right on the tips of their toes.
bareback	the incredibly risky practice of having sex without a condom; may also be applied to oral sex
bathroom	a US term for a beat in a public toilet

BBBJ	Bare-Back Blow Job; unprotected oral sex, ie: without a condom
BBV	Blood-Borne Virus; viruses which exist in and are transmitted through the bloodstream
BBW	Big Beautiful Woman; a larger woman
BDSM	bondage, discipline (or dominance), sadism, and masochism
bear	a large, hairy gay guy. See also: cub
beat	a public place, often a public toilet or a park, where homosexual men meet for sex. See also dogging
bent	colloquial term for unspecified non-straightness
bf, BF	boyfriend
BHM	Big Hunky Man; a larger gentleman
bi chauvanism	the attitude that bisexuality is superior to other sexualities. I must admit that I am slightly bi chauvanist, for which I apologise. It's just so hard not to think that this is a freakin' fantastic way to be...
bi curious	someone who identifies as a heterosexual but who is curious about having a same-sex encounter
binding	technique used by female-to-male transvestites and transsexuals where they bind their breasts to their body using a constrictive garment, in order to make their breasts appear less obvious
birching	being flogged with a bundle of birch sticks. A bundle of sticks can also be known as a faggot, which leads to all sorts of possibilities...
BJ	blowjob; oral sex
blow 'n' go	quick anonymous sexual activity, usually between gay males, where one partner arrives at the other's house or hotel, has sex with them, and then leaves immediately
bod mod	body modifications; the term refers to activities or changes designed to alter the form of one's body, such as those rings (I can't remember what they're called) which go through and stretch out the ear lobe, although the term can also include piercing and tattooing
bondage	the act of restraining a partner, or being restrained, for pleasure
bonded	in some kind of non-casual relationship; despite its appearance, this is not necessarily a BDSM term. For example, a fluid-bonded couple may agree to only have unprotected sex with each other, and use condoms for all other enocunters.
booty call	a telephone call made to a fuck buddy to make a request for casual sex
bottom	in gay sex, the partner who takes the receptive role See also: top, active, passive
breath play	the practice of restricting or temporarily cutting off a person's flow of oxygen. This is potentially dangerous and should never be done alone, if at all.
breed	to ejaculate inside a woman's vagina without using a condom, with the implicit intention of at least simulating making her pregnant. May also refer to a similar act with a male (although obviously the practical and cultural implications are different). There is an obvious risk of contracting HIV or other sexually-transmitted infections from unprotected sex.
breeders	mildly derogatory term used by gays and lesbians to describe the straight community
brocade	fancy satiny material with embroidered patterns, often seen in corsets and fancy lingerie... mmmm, yum.
brown	involving faeces
btm	Internet shorthand for bottom
bug-chaser	someone who seeks to deliberately infect themselves with the HIV virus, often through risky unprotected sex. This is incredibly dangerous and we totally discourage it. HIV-AIDS is an incurable, fatal condition. Despite recent advances in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, no-one who is HIV+ is likely to die of old age.
bukkake	Japanese sexual practice where a large group of men all ejaculate onto one woman's face. May also be applied to all-male situations.
bustier	a lingerie garment consisting of a bra attached to a corset-like covering for the lower chest and stomach
butt plug	a short dildo used for anal play. It is distinguished by having a wide base to stop if from, ummm, getting lost.

camel toe	vaguely offensive slang term referring to the outline of a woman's vulva when seen through very tight clothing or lingerie
camoflage cream	makeup used as a heavy concealer; I use it to hide my beard stubble, for which it is highly effective
Carnival Day	Family picnic and carnival day, part of the Melbourne Midsumma gay and lesbian festival.
Castro, the	area of the US city of San Francisco known for its gay culture
CBT	Cock and Ball Torture
CD	CrossDresser
CD/TV	CrossDresser/TransVestite [not a piece of multifunctional audio-visual equipment]
CFMs	Come-Fuck-Me boots; knee-high boots
CHDW	Clueless Heterosexual Dom Wannabe. Pronounced, and sometimes spelt, CHUDWAH. An inexperienced would-be dominant who blunders around ineptly attempting to direct a submissive to submit to them, unsuccessfully.
chela	term originating in Hinduism roughly equivalent to 'disciple'. Occasionally used to refer to a novice or apprentice BDSM practitioner
CiM	Cum In Mouth
circle jerk	sexual activity where a number of men form a circle and masturbate. This may be part of a bukkake activity
chaps	leg coverings, similar to a pair of crotchless trousers. As a fetish garment, they may often be made of leather.
chems	chemicals, ie: drugs. I have seen this refer both to amyl and to drugs such as speed, ecstacy, etc
chlamydia	sexually transmitted infection; click here for more details
Christian Right	group of emotionally-repressed religious nuts who get upset about sex, but who don't feel the need to complain about violence. See also: hypocrite I just looove the way leading anti-gay politicians and evangelical preachers in the US keep getting [metaphorically] caught bent over the couch with a cock in their arse. Imagine if a prominent (male) gay activist was found in bed with a woman... shock! Horror!
cincher	a very short corset, almost like a very wide belt. It typically covers from the waist to just underneath the breasts (if worn on a woman). They are otherwise similar to a full-size corset, only shorter.
cisgendered	adjective describing someone who identifies with the gender they were born in, ie: the opposite of transgendered
clean	term used in some personals ads to denote 'HIV-negative'. Many people, myself included, find the implication that someone who's HIV-positive is unclean to be quite offensive.
cluster-fuck	a debacle, fiasco, or unsatisfactory situation. This term has nothing to do with sex whatsoever, although it sounds as though it might refer to some kind of kinky group sex situation... which of course is why I included it.
cockfight	extremely uncommon form of potentially violent sex between two (usually) gay men where the participants consent to sex in a violent context; perhaps whereby they wrestle until one is able to masturbate the other without reciprocation so that the loser is the one who cums first. cock ring	a ring worn around the base of the penis which forces blood to remain in the penis. This assists in maintaining an erection, and also promotes a feeling of tightness and engorgement in the penis.

collar (verb)	a submissive who has been collared by a particular dominant has been pledged to that dominant, and would usually not play with other dominants without their permission
compulsive cruising	continued searching for the ideal sexual partner or experience
consensual non-consent	the willing transference of power from a sub to a dom/me, on the clearly-understood basis that the sub has given up their free will to their dom/me
contact tracing	Procedure whereby sexual partners of people recently infected with HIV are traced by health authorities and offered testing and/or counselling.
conversion party	party where bug chasers (HIV- negative men who wish to become HIV-positive) have sex with HIV+ men so as to become HIV+ themselves. This is incredibly dangerous and we totally discourage it. HIV-AIDS is an incurable, fatal condition. Despite recent advances in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, no-one who is HIV-positive is likely to die of old age.
corset	a restrictive garment, popular in the 18th century and usually worn be females, which forces the waist into a feminine shape. They look fucking fantastic.
cottaging	UK slang term for cruising or having sex in a beat
covered	protected sex, ie: with a condom "we had really good covered sex before I came in the condom"

cpl (1)	internet shorthand for 'couple'
cpl (2)	uncommon internet shorthand for 'corporal', as in corporal punishment
crop	a short (60cm) mostly stiff whip
crossdresser	a person who dresses in the clothing of the opposite gender. Often used interchangeably with 'transvestite'. See labels
Crowley, Aleister	Aleister Crowley (1875–1947) was an English occultist, mystic, hedonist, outdoorsman, writer, and libertine. He was notorious and was once described as 'the wickedest man in the world'. He is accused by some of racism, sexism, and anti-Semitism. See Wikipedia for more.
cruising	the process of finding a partner at an activity, venue, or intenet chat room for the purposes of sexual activity. Cruising may involve moving through different rooms or spaces, or alternatively staying still, and communicating using both verbal and non-verbal means.
crush fetish	fetish whereby someone gains pleasure from seeing something, or imagining oneself, crushed underfoot. In extreme cases this may mean that people gain pleasure from seeing insects and even small animals crushed underfoot. I have a severe ethical problem with this fetish; by definition, an insect is unable to give informed consent.

cub	a larger, hairy, younger gay guy- see bear
cuddle party	an adult social activity encouraging physical affection such as cuddling, massage, and other physical contact, but not sexual contact or stimulation.
cut	circumcised
cum bunny	a (usually submissive) sexual participant, either male or female, who enjoys being ejaculated upon by one or more men
cyber	contraction of cybersex; a sex-related discussion, usually involving participants describing their actions and reactions, in an internet chat room. See also roleplay.

daisychain	a sexual situation where several people penetrate or otherwise interact with each other simulatenously in a chain arrangement
dam	dental dam; a piece of latex or other material used to prevent transmission of bodily fluids during rimming or cunnilingus
DATY	Dining At The Y(MCA); peforming oral sex upon a woman. My understanding of this obscure acronym is that it refers to the Y-shaped curve of a woman's pubic region; I can only assume that the YMCA or YWCA must have had an advertising campaign somewhere some time encouraging people to 'dine at the Y'.

dental dam	a 10-12cm square of latex used as a safer-sex barrier for performing oral sex on a woman. Also known as a latex dam or latex square.
depiliatory	of or relating to hair removal
deviant	Departing from the statistical norm, average, or social ideal. Given that (like it or not) the majority of people are at least mostly heterosexual, in a technical, statistical, sense, anything which is homosexually- and transgender- oriented is 'deviant'. Thus, most of the after-dark activities described on this web site could be considered 'deviant'... cool!
dildo	a substitute penis [if you don't know that, you're probably not old enough to be looking at this site!]
dimorphism	having two forms, such as male/female or juvenile/adult; for example, a caterpillar (juvenile form) and butterfly (adult). Part-time trannies presumably have two forms.
DL	Diaper Lover; a very specific fetish relating to nappies. Sometimes seen as AB/DL, Adult Baby/Diaper Lover.

Dodson, Betty	US sex eduator, author, and advocate of masturbation.
dogging	the act of meeting strangers for anonymous sex in a public place, often in their car. This term is more often applied to heterosexual sex; see also beat
dominance	having control and authority over your partner. Antonyn: submission
dom/domme (noun)	short form of dominant; a dom is male, while a domme is female. I suppose theoretically if someone spoke of a 'tdomme' they would be referring to a tgirl domme... cool!
dom/domme (verb)	to dominate
dom/me	gender-neutral combination of dom and domme
domina	alternative to domme (feminine only)
dominant	someone who takes a 'superior' or controlling role over a submissive in BDSM play
dominatrix	a female dominant
donovanosis	A sexually transmitted infection causing ulcers on the genital area, prevalent in tropical areas; click here for more on other sexually transmitted infections
dotting the eyes	slang term for ejaculating on one's partner's face
DP	Double Penetration
DQ	Drag Queen
DS	dominance/submission; alternate version of BDSM. May also refer to a dominant/submissive switch.
drab	term used by CD/TVs for male clothing/appearance. It is possibly as an acronym for DRessed as A Boy; if that is the case, then it would apply equally to a female-to-male crossdresser.
drag	colloquial term for gender-inappropriate clothing; 'Fred went to the Christmas party in drag'. Possibly as an acronym for DRessed as A Girl.
drag king	a female-to-male crossdresser, often with exaggerated or sterotypical masculine mannerisms.
drag queen	a male-to-female transvestite, often in an entertainment context and with exaggerated or sterotypical feminine mannerisms. To me, the term 'drag queen' implies a certain level of outrageousness and exaggeration of feminine characteristics.
dressage whip	see riding crop
dressed	in reference to crossdressers and transvestites, this term refers to being in female clothing and appearance
dungeon monitor	a play supervisor at a BDSM party who watches out for everyone's safety and enjoyment; similar in role to a workplace Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) officer. For example, a DM may stop a scene if they believe someone too intoxicated to give informed consent is about to allow themselves to be whipped.

e-sexual	someone who primarily has romantic or sexual liaisons online

edgeplay	Sexual activities and fetishes which are generally considered to be near, or over, the edge of acceptability. Although this is obviously very subjective, examples might include radical body modification, rape scenes, blood play, breaking social taboos, or some medical fetishes. What is considered acceptable may change as social attitudes change; facials may once have been considered edgy, but are now commonly found within everyday play within some communities.
effeminate	a male having feminine or 'sissy' characteristics
electrolysis	process where hair follicles are killed using an electric current to cause permanent hair removal.
emo	a musical and clothing style vaguely similar to punk and gothic styles but with less emphasis on scary black stuff. More on Wikipedia.
EMT scissors	Emergency Medical Technician scissors are scissors which can safely cut clothing without injuring a patient. It is recommended that people engaging in some forms of BDSM play, for example mummification, keep a pair handy in case the submissive needs to be released in a hurry.
en femme	in reference to crossdressers and transvestites, this term refers to being in female clothing and appearance
endorphin	the body's own natural morphine-like substances. Endorphins in the bloodstream are what you feel after an orgasm.
eonism	archaic term for crossdressing and transvestism
epilator	a mechanical device for plucking large numbers of hairs at once. They operate like electrically-driven rotary tweezers, where lots of tiny tweezers spin around on a cylinder and pluck hairs as they spin. Although the results are impressive, they can be quite painful until you get used it and/or the hairs have been plucked once and have grown back smaller and thinner. Epilady is one well-known product name; I use one from Braun.

I find this term slightly offensive because: 1. it is somewhat discriminatory, 2. everyone has to start somewhere, and unless you started dressing before puberty, you were probably a HMiP at one stage too, 3. for some people, even simple things like putting on panties are a bold step and they should be congratulated for their courage, and 4. many HMiPs are probably attached but haven't told their partners, and are therefore unable to make obvious changes such as shaving, waxing, etc. Having said that, I do recognise that there are some men out there who want to snare themselves a 'more passable' CD/TV by presenting themselves as a CD/TV but not actually dressing fully.

hard limit	within BDSM play, a pre-determined limit which can never be crossed. For example, a submissive with a suffocation phobia may direct that they are never to be gagged. Hirschfeld, Magnus (1868- 1935)	well-known German doctor and gay rights activist who pioneered theories on gender identity, and who was later persecuted by the Nazis. He advocated that instead of a strict masculine/feminine dichotomy, there is a continuum of sexual identity from masculine to feminine, with everyone being placed somewhere on that continuum.
