Dogging is the practice of people meeting in public places such as car parks or adult cinemas for anonymous sex. It could be considered the heterosexual equivalent of a beat. I am inexperienced in dogging, so some areas of the etiquette are unclear to me; below are tips I have found in my travels. Personal safety (read this in conjunction with the safety in public page)
- Always have safer sex
- You can keep small sachets of lubricant in the glovebox (I assume- I don't think it goes off) which reduces the likelihood of condom breakages
- if you're in a couple, have a set of clearly pre-defined limits, and safe word a which means 'we need to slow down or stop'.
- Be aware of your personal safety. When setting up a meeting, don't give out identifying personal information.
- Arrange to meet in places where you won't be disturbed, but not so distant and lonely that you couldn't get help if you needed it. A good rule of thumb might be that if there's no mobile phone reception, it's a bad place to meet
- Don't simply post the time and location of a dogging meet on the internet, otherwise you'll have everyone, including the police, turn up. Instead, post a message advertising the meeting and let people contact you for details. This also gives you an opportunity to screen out obvious idiots.
- remember that many dogging locations are also beats (public places used by gay men for anonymous sex).
- take plentiful condoms, lubricant, wet wipes, tissues, gloves, etc.
- dogging is offensive to some people, so be sensible and discreet about when and where you hook up.

Etiquette
- if it's an arranged meeting, be on time and give accurate directions
- be clean and smell nice
- keep headlights down as low as possible to drive safely, and park slightly away from other cars. Don't park where you'll block someone else's view.
- approach cars from the front and don't sneak up on people; they may already be a little nervous and giving them a fright may cause them to leave. Never lurk in bushes.
- let people warm up and adjust to the environment; don't rush them as soon as they arrive.
- don't join in unless invited to; a threesome could be a dogger couple and single dogger, or it may simply be three drunk friends getting carried away in public. Remember that the invitation may be non-verbal.
- be respectful and appreciative
- don't be afraid to tell people to back off if they're getting too full-on for you.
- if either you or your partner are starting to feel uncomfortable, do not be afraid to call an end to proceedings and leave. You don't owe anybody anything.
- if you find someone you really like, it is OK to ask for email addresses or mobile numbers, but be discreet.
- leave as soon as the show is over.
- when leaving, place any litter in bins or take it home. Many beats and dogging sites attract public attention because of public-nuisance issues like these, leading to increased police surveillance.

Signals
- An interior light left on often means that you are happy to accommodate voyeurs.
- Rolling down the windows often indicates that they are happy for you to get close to the car and perhaps touch/ fondle/ grope.
- Opening the car door often signifies an invite to join in the fun.
- Flashing headlights may be a signal that a couple would like you to approach.
- if you have a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone or PDA, set it to broadcast your (assumed) name so that other people with Bluetooth devices know you're available.
